Overview

Autoimmune disease is a condition in which the immune system fails to distinguish self from non-self and directs antibodies and immune cells against the body's own tissues, producing chronic inflammation and progressive organ damage. It results from a breakdown of immunological tolerance shaped by genetic predisposition, environmental exposures, and immune dysregulation, and it may be organ-specific or systemic in distribution. The clinical spectrum is broad, and research in this area reflects that diversity: demyelinating disorders of the central nervous system such as multiple sclerosis and acute disseminated encephalomyelitis; thyroid autoimmunity including Hashimoto's thyroiditis; immune thrombocytopenia and its laboratory diagnosis; ocular autoimmune injury; and overlap presentations such as autoimmune polyglandular syndrome. Work also examines the genetic and inflammatory determinants of autoimmunity, immune responses following infection or vaccination, and the role of nutrition and metabolites such as vitamin D in immune regulation. Mechanistic interest centers on autoreactive lymphocytes, autoantibody production, and cytokine-driven tissue destruction. Across these strands, scholarship on autoimmune disease seeks to identify triggers and susceptibility factors, improve diagnostic accuracy and the recognition of overlapping syndromes, and develop targeted interventions that re-establish tolerance while limiting broad immunosuppression and its risks.
