Overview

Cancer is a group of diseases defined by the unchecked growth of cells that escape normal regulatory controls, acquire the ability to invade adjacent tissue, and can spread to distant organs. It develops through the progressive accumulation of genetic and epigenetic changes that activate growth-promoting pathways, disable tumor-suppressor and apoptotic safeguards, and remodel the surrounding microenvironment. Tumors are categorized by their tissue of origin and increasingly by molecular subtype, which informs prognosis and treatment. Research across this area addresses mechanisms of tumor initiation, progression, and relapse, including the regulation of specific genes in colorectal cancer and the cellular basis of therapeutic resistance, as well as the immune and inflammatory dimensions of malignancy. A substantial body of work focuses on prevention and early detection, particularly the uptake and design of cervical and colorectal cancer screening programs across varied populations, alongside epidemiological surveillance of incidence and survival. The psychosocial burden of cancer, including mental health among patients, is also examined, as are complementary and dietary approaches to prevention. Collectively, scholarship on cancer integrates molecular biology, immunology, epidemiology, and clinical care to clarify how malignancies arise, how they can be detected and prevented, and how patient outcomes and quality of life can be improved.
