Overview
Cytoplasm is the gel-like substance enclosed within the cell membrane, excluding the nucleus, where essential cellular processes occur. Research published in this journal examines cytoplasmic functions across diverse biological contexts, from molecular regulation to structural organization. Studies have investigated how cytoplasmic retention of specific proteins such as CDC6 influences cellular senescence and tumor suppression, revealing mechanisms that control cell fate decisions. Other work has explored cytoplasmic changes in response to environmental stressors, including structural alterations in liver cells exposed to nanoparticles and proteomic shifts in cereal crops under drought and salt stress. The journal has also published research on specialized cytoplasmic compartments, documenting proplastid and chloroplast development in plant apical meristems and examining how circular RNAs function within the cytoplasm in neurodegenerative conditions. Additional studies address cytoplasmic components in the context of metabolic interventions and cellular pathology. Understanding cytoplasmic organization and function is fundamental to cell biology, as this compartment houses the machinery for protein synthesis, energy metabolism, and signal transduction, making it central to both normal physiology and disease processes across plant, animal, and human systems.
