Overview

Population health refers to the health outcomes of a defined group of people and the distribution of those outcomes within the group, together with the factors and policies that shape them. Rather than focusing on individual patients, it takes a broad view that considers how social, economic, environmental, behavioral, and healthcare-related determinants combine to influence the health of communities and populations. The field seeks to understand patterns of health and disease across groups, identify and address inequalities, and design interventions and policies that improve overall health and reduce disparities. Central concepts include the social determinants of health, the role of upstream factors such as income, education, housing, and environment, and the integration of public health, healthcare delivery, and community action. Population health approaches are used to inform resource allocation, guide preventive strategies, and evaluate the impact of programs and policies on the health of whole populations. Within the scope of the International Journal of Global Health, this collection includes related work, including an evaluation of health impact assessment practice and a study of the impact of climate change on public health.
