The purpose of this essay is to discuss the advantages and disadvantages and the benefits and costs of Big Data. The paper outlines the relevant federal and state privacy laws, including the California Consumer Privacy Act as amended, the Virginia Consumer Data Protection Act, and the Colorado Privacy Act. While highlighting several Federal Trade Commission privacy violation cases, the effects of Big Data collection and government surveillance are described in some detail. Advertising and marketing are defined, where it is argued that while the scanning of emails by email providers may be legal, it should be accomplished with consent, or not at all. The essentials of contract law and specific contract negotiation techniques are outlined for the benefit of attorneys. Finally, it is argued that although Big Data is the wave of the future, like all human institutions, it has in its definition the inherent paradoxes of transparency, identity, power, and exclusion that may potentially spell its undoing.

Big data research has become popular and exciting studies in almost all scientific fields such as biology, chemistry, epidemiology, medicine and drug discovery. The various systems and platforms produce large amounts of data every day. It will be very helpful for the researchers and workers to deal with big data if the practical database and useful software are introduced in time. The Journal of Big Data Research (JBR) supplies an efficient and open access publishing platform for big data research. The first issue of JBR aims to foster the dissemination of high-quality big data studies in the biological, medical and chemical database as well as the new algorithm and software for big data processing. The database and computing framework are selected to introduce the development of big data in the biological, medicine and drug discovery. The mature and functional database can be serviced in big data research of scientific fields. It promotes the scientists to extract the useful and essential dataset from the massive data. The grid computing and cloud computing supplies a new paradigm that offers an effective framework of computing and services. The research papers are welcomed from the scopes of the practical database, new algorithm and software for big data studies. All these kinds of papers not only provide the effective application methods and platforms, but also give a good promising future for big data research.

The scientific and technological interventions for attaining precision in plant genetics and breeding since Mendel’s discovery of genetic laws have been critically reviewed in terms of cloning technology and reverse genetics, chip technology, genetically modified organisms and CRISPR-based gene editing technology. Their roles in further refining the plant genetics and breeding practices particularly their exploitation in creating variations and their use for development of superior genotypes in model crops like wheat and rice have been discussed. It is stressed how such interventions could prove to be promising for meeting future crop improvement program in terms of climate change, bio-fortification, imaging technology, statistics, big data revolution and deep learning.
